New Audi S8: as fast as Lamborghini Gallardo!

The previous-generation Audi S8 (2005-2008) was a unique combination of a luxury full-size sedan and the Lamborghini Gallardo`s V10 engine, which was as ridiculous as beautiful mix.

Now the S8 goes a different road, cooperating with Bentley brand (which is also part of Volkswagen Group) and utilizing the new 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, which is also planned to become new base engine of the new Continental GT.

Besides risen power (520 hp against previous-version`s 450 hp), the new engine provides improved torque, making 650 N*m from only 1700 rpm. At the same time, fuel efficiency is improved by 23%, to 10,3 l/100 km in European combined cycle. Which probably won`t be anyway close to real numbers of those who`ll use the resources of the S8 in appropriate way. In fact, speaking about performance and 4-wheel-drive feature, the new Audi S8 is now competing with the elitist Porsche Panamera Turbo and Bentley Continental, which used to cost about twice as more (he prices of the new S8 haven`t been announced yet).

By the way, the same engine is now placed under the hoods of the new S6 sedan and the S7 hatchback, but in a downgraded 420-hp version.

The new S8 must be especially agile, since its now equipped with torque-vectoring sport differential at the rear axis. Also the driver can set different modes for steering, suspension settings, throttle sensitivity, and transmission behavior, making the car`s reactions even faster.

Finally, optional carbon-ceramic brakes are now available, which will probably cost a fortune, but provide superb fade resistance. Something one should always keep in mind in a 2-tonn sedan making 250 km/h (could be even more if not the electronic limiter).

Meanwhile the style upgrades of the “S” are very subtle, limited to V8T badges, brushed-metal mirror caps, quad-exit exhaust, and accented front grille.

The S8 will feature a number of Audi A8`s options as standard, including the all-LED headlights. Still, there shouldn`t be lack of optional equipment, including the 1400-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, 360-degree exterior cameras etc. Meanwhile the style upgrades of the “S” are very subtle, limited to V8T badges, brushed-metal mirror caps, quad-exit exhaust, and accented front grille.

The Audi S8 will be available in Europe next spring, and exact prices and options are probably to be announced closer do Christmas. The previous S8 cost only €97.600 (“only” meaning compared to Mercedes and BMW flagships), and there is a chance that the new S8 will still be a very attractive offering.
