All-new Chevrolet Camaro: more power, lightness and high-tech inside

1) More than 200 pounds lighter and slightly smaller than the predecessor (188" long, 75" wide, 53" tall)

The new Camaro`s body has become over 130 pounds lighter and 28% stiffer.

Also aluminum and/or redesigned components provide additional weight saving, including suspension links.

Overall weight saving is over 200 pounds, with total weight probably about 3700 pounds.

As a result new Camaro is quicker, more agile, more comfortable (lighter suspension provides lower unsprung masses and softer ride) and more fuel-efficient than its predecessor.

2) Even more powerful SS version: 455 hp (V8 6.2 liter)

though no performance specs have been released yet, the new Camaro SS will probably beat the predecessor`s 4.5 seconds to 60 mph and 156 mph top speed

3) 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission

The most powerful, the V8 Camaro SS has become even closer to more expensive Corvette: it features the same 8-speed Hydra-Matic 8L90 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters as the Corvette Stingray and even more powerful 650-hp Corvette Z06.

The good news for the buyers of the cheaper 4- and 6-cylinder versions of the Camaro is that it also can be equipped with a sophisticated 8-speed automatic gearbox (the new Hydra-Matic 8L45), also with paddle shfters,

And the standard transmission for all versions of the Camaro is a 6-speed manual, with new Active Rev Match technology for the most powerful SS version

(The Active Rev Match helps to make smooth downshifts by predicting which gear is about to be turned on and adjusting REVs lower of higher for smooth driving and helping the driver look more professional than he of she is).

And another upgrade is that the handbrake which

new affordable 2.0-liter turbo version (275 hp, below 6 seconds to 60 mph)

The entry-level 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is now equipped with a 4-cylinder 2-liter turbocharged engine rated at 275 hp and 295 lb-ft, with 90% of torque available from 2100 RPM. It is promised that it can accelerate the car to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.

Besides that, the engine is expected to provide good fuel efficiency with over 30 mpg on the highway.

The third and mid-level available engine is a naturally-aspired 3.6-liter V6 which makes 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque.

4) Available electronically-adjustable driving mode selector (engine, transmission, stablity/traction control, suspension) with special "Track" race-oriented mode

As most modern sports cars, the new Camaro offers adjustable driving settings, ranging from the softest, comfort ones intended for comfort and winter driving, to the hardest, most dynamical ones.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro features as many as 6 adjustable performance parameters, which are combined in 4 modes: Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport and Track (the latter reserved for the SS only).

The adjustable parameters include:

- Throttle pedal reaction

- Automatic transmission shift speed and map

- Power steering force

- Stabilitrak Competitive mode and Launch control

- Suspension Magnetic Ride Control (optional)

Another not performance but emotional setting includes adjustable Engine sound management (with optional Dual-mode exhaust, which actually has 4 sound settings)

Another funny feature is the ambient lighting which changes color depending on the driver mode selector settings:

- Snow/Ice driver mode: ice blue ambient lighting

- Tour: blue

- Sport: red

- Track: orange

5) New interior electronics including 8-inch instrument cluster display, LED 24-color ambient lighting system with theatrical “car show” mode, and climate controls integrated into the air ducts.

6) High-performance Brembo brakes

All versions of the 2016 Camaro now can be equipped with Brembo brakes with 4-piston calipers. Those are optional for the 4- and 6-cylinder versions (with 12.6-inch front rotors), and standard on SS (with 13,3" front rotors and 4-pinston calipers on both axles, against 1-piston rear calipers on cheaper versions).

7) Performance data display

The new Camaro, similar to the newest C7 Corvette, will be able to display on the dashboard the 0-60 mph acceleration time, quarter mile performance, side Gs etc.

However, unlike the Corvette. the Camaro`s version of the performance meter probably will not be able to export YouTube videos. Still, its always fun to know you hit 60 mph in under 5 seconds and to share a camera shot in Facebook.

Prices will probably remain at about $35,000 for 455-hp SS and at about $24,000 cheapest about 300-hp version.
